  • The Lansing School Board will host a public hearing of its proposed 2013-2014 school year budget at 7 p.m. Monday in the board office, 200 E. Mary St. in Lansing.
Following that meeting, the board will be asked to approve a budget for the next school year that will mean a nearly 9-mill increase in property taxes for homeowners.
In budget documents, nearly the whole of that increase is in the district's bond and interest fund, which as proposed would increase from 9.819 mills in 2012-2013 to 18.88 mills next year.
According to budget documents for the district, the bond and interest fund will have to absorb an additional $3,463,807 in expenditures in 2013-2014 compared to the previous year, an increase relating to the $73 million in new debt that was issued late last year, following voter approval, for the construction of a new Lansing High School and the renovation of the existing high school into the new location of Lansing Middle School. Documents show the first payment on that debt due next year.
Elsewhere in the budget, the district's supplemental general fund will decrease slightly as proposed, from 18.376 to 18.370 mills. The capital outlay fund would increase, from 3.998 in 2012-2013 to an even 4 mills.
That would bring the total property tax levy to 61.885 mills for 2013-2014, up from 53.009 the year before.
On a house valued at $100,000, that means an additional $102.07 annually in property taxes for the school district, or roughly $8.51 additionally each month.
