1 What is the Hometown Welcome?
Hometown Welcome, scheduled for 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at Haymarket Square, Seventh and Cherokee streets, is a free family-friendly event to welcome new military families into the Leavenworth community. Soldiers and their families, single soldiers and Department of Defense civilians are encouraged to come. This is also a chance for longtime members of the community to show our service members that Leavenworth is a military-friendly place to live, shop and work.

2 What are some of the activities people can expect to see at the event?
There will be live music, children’s activities and food and drink for sale. The event is intended to be a low-key atmosphere so that military families, especially those with young children, can come and go as they please. Scrivener’s Creative Center in Leavenworth is providing a kid zone with arts and crafts activities for children. Local food vendors Café Chillingo, Garcia’s Pollo, Fou Cakes and Lamborn Farms will sell food. Beer selections from local brewer High Noon Saloon will be sold to individuals over 21 with a valid ID. Soft drinks and water will also be available for purchase. Cash is recommended.

3 What is the purpose of the Hometown Welcome?
Many military families have gone through a tremendous amount of stress in recent years, and this is a chance for them to relax, be a family, and meet members of the Leavenworth community. For those who have never been to Kansas, this is a great chance to learn about our culture.

    4 Who organizes this event?
Fort Leavenworth Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, Leavenworth Main Street and the city of Leavenworth collaborate on this event. This is the fourth year for the event.

5 What is new at this year’s event?
This year’s Leavenworth Hometown Welcome returns to its historic Leavenworth roots with Kansas bluegrass music. Local bands, including some former military members, will perform. Bands include Dave Howey and the Circle A Wranglers, Steve Heinricks and Chris Biggs and Kansas Heart.
