Charlie Kramer with Kaaz Construction works Thursday to remove a concrete sign that was part of the old Leavenworth County Jail. The sign was removed ahead of the demolition of the building, which is located at 503 S. Third St. Mike Spickelmier, the county's public works director, said the sign will be preserved.
    1939
The old jail reportedly was built in 1939 as a Works Progress Administration project. The jail was moved from that building after the Justice Center, which is located next door, opened in 2000.
    2013
Following the demolition, a parking lot will be constructed at the site of the old jail. Spickelmier said the project should be completed by the end of 2013.
