Local track and field athletes got All-American status at the AAU Junior Olympics near Detroit.
Local track and field athletes got All-American status at the AAU Junior Olympics near Detroit. Mark Mitchell and Victoria Robinson, who were two of the six athletes who qualified from the AAU Missouri Valley Region, reached the All American status by finishing in the top eight. The other athletes distinguished themselves among the nation's top 100 elite athletes in their events. Mitchell placed second in the long jump in the 10-year-old boys division. He also placed 15th in the 100 meter run (13:75) and 29th in the 200 meter run with a time of 28:69. In the 14-year-old girls division, Robinson placed 18th in the 800 meter run (2:29), 16th in the 1500 meter run (5:09), 11th in the 4x400 meter relay and 10th in the 4x800 meter relay. In the 14-year-old boys division, Clifford Robinson III placed 13th in the 100 meter run (11:56) and 23rd in the 200 meter run with a time of 23:56. Terry Robinson placed 12th in 3000 meter run (11:20), 13th in the 1500 meter run (5:13) and 19th in the 800 meter run (2:31) in the 11-year-old boys division. Joseph Ativie got 43rd in the shot put in the 15/16-year-old boys division. Isaac Ativie finished 31st in the 200 meter run (32:08), 45th in the 400 meter run and 54th in the 100 meter run (16:09). There were 27 regions across the U.S. and Puerto Rico at the event. About 100 athletes competed in each event.
