The Leavenworth volleyball team may have ended 2012 with an 11-28 record, but this season's group will be led by several seniors. “I will be looking toward my seniors to lead the charge this year,” said second-year coach Josh Padilla. “We have to focus and maintain our mental toughness. The girls now understand that everyone has a role and our success is based on their accepting their roles and focusing on the team effort.” Setter Sydney Moon, libero Brittany Bosarge, and outside hitters Savannah Lucas and Michelle Tennant will be the senior leaders this season. Other players to watch will be juniors Mahogani Grant, Tyler Johnson and Shelby Ogden. Padilla said he will just continue to build the program in his second year as head coach. “The team's record did not reflect the positives, but I am confident that 2013 will bring a successful season and continue the reviving of the program,” he said. The summer break was an opportunity for the players to improve their skills. “We attended a few camps this summer, which has helped with our overall development,” Padilla said. The familiarity among the players should help with the development as well. “Our team dynamics are definitely one of our strengths,” Padilla said. “The girls know each other very well and trust each other a great deal as players and competitors.” Padilla said the team certainly has the will to win, but finishing sets is an area to improve. “It's something we have worked on a great deal over the summer,” he said. “It's all about heart and confidence, and we have plenty of that. We have to let go, just play and have fun doing it.” The season gets started at home on Sept. 3 against Mill Valley and St. Thomas Aquinas. "They are ready," Padilla said. "They've been ready. It'll be fun to watch this season."
