Man Anand, M.D., became interested in the medical specialty of psychiatry while he was practicing medicine in England. "As a primary care physician, I saw many people who were dealing with behavioral health issues and that intrigued me," Dr. Anand says.
In fact, he was so intrigued by the prospect of helping these patients, that he decided to specialize in psychiatry, and came to the University of Kansas to complete his residency.
That was more than 25 years ago, and today Dr. Anand serves as medical director for Saint John Hospital's Senior Behavioral Health Center. He also is a past president of the Saint John Hospital Medical Staff.
"As our geriatric population increases, we are seeing a rise in behavioral disturbances in these patients, such as dementia and depression," Dr. Anand says. "In many cases, these are people who have given so much of their lives to their family and community. It is very rewarding to be able to help them improve their quality of life and return to their highest level of functioning."
