The groundbreaking for the new Lansing High School is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Sept. 9. The groundbreaking will be at the site of the new school, which is located on 147th St. about 3/4 mile south of 4-H Road.
  • Work already has started at the site, but officials are planning a formal groundbreaking for a new Lansing High School.
The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Sept. 9 at the site of the new school. The new school will be constructed on land located on 147th Street about 3/4 mile south of 4-H Road.
Lansing Superintendent Randy Bagby said the public is invited to attend the groundbreaking. He's expecting a brief ceremony.
"It probably will take about 15 minutes," he said.
The new 220,000 square-foot high school will be constructed as a result of a $73 million bond issue that was passed by voters last year.
The building is slated for completion in August 2015.
"We've got some stuff going going on out there now," Bagby said of the site.
The budgeted cost of the new high school, which will have a capacity for 1,200 students, is $45.25 million.
Additional plans for the 154-acre site include football and soccer stadiums, tennis courts, softball fields and a practice baseball field. The cost for the athletic fields and stadiums is budgeted at $16.16 million.
A six-lane competition swimming pool also is planned at the high school at a cost of $3.59 million.
An additional $8 million is budgeted for converting the existing Lansing High School, located at 220 Lion Lane, into the new Lansing Middle School.
The existing high school building will receive a couple of additions as well as interior renovations. Bagby said this work will begin as the existing high school is emptied to avoid disruption to students. This work is scheduled for completion in January 2016. Lansing Middle School may be moved to its new location during that school year's winter break.
Bagby said there are plans for eventually using the current Lansing Middle School, 509 W. Ida St., as an intermediate school for fourth- and fifth-graders. He said this would free up space at Lansing Elementary School, 450 W. Mary St.
"Because it's overflowing," he said of the elementary building.
Bagby said the bond issue did not include any money for making renovations to the existing middle school building.
