  • A report released Wednesday by the Kansas City Office of the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that unemployment in Leavenworth County rose in July.
    The unemployment rate rose from 6.3 percent in June to 6.8 percent in July. Before last month's increase, the unemployment rate for the county had been on a downward trend since spiking to 7.8 percent in January.
    Last month's unemployment rate was down from a year earlier. The unemployment rate in July 2012 was 7.3 percent, according to the report.
    The most recent report indicates the county had 155 fewer people who were unemployed last month compared to July 2012.
    Many other counties in the Kansas City Metropolitan area also saw increases in unemployment last month including neighboring Wyandotte County, which went from 8.2 percent in June to 9.3 in July.
    Overall, what is referred to as the Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area saw its unemployment rate go from 6.6 percent in June to 7.1 percent in July, according to the report.
    At the state level, Kansas' unemployment rate increased from 5.8 in June to 6.2 in July. The state's unemployment rate was slightly lower last month than in July 2012, when the rate was 6.3 percent.
    At the national level, the unemployment rate dropped slightly from 7.8 percent in June to 7.7 percent in July. The national unemployment rate was down last month compared to July 2012 when the rate was 8.6 percent.
