Local residents heading to the store this weekend might bump into members of the Leavenworth Fire Department.
The firefighters will be collecting donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association through at least Sunday evening in front of Walmart, 5000 10th Ave.; Dillons, 720 Eisenhower Road; and Country Mart, 1920 Spruce St.
"We'll be standing around with our boots trying to fill them (with donations) for the MDA," said Jeff Porter, a member of the Leavenworth Fire Department who coordinated the local collection effort.
He said firefighters also will be handing out stickers.
The fundraising campaign for the MDA is a tradition for firefighters in Leavenworth and elsewhere around the country.
Porter said fire departments and the MDA have been associated with each other for a long time.
"It's a relationship that continues," he said.
This year's local collection effort began Friday afternoon.
Porter said donations in Leavenworth have been down couple of years.
"We're hoping to get those figures back up," he said.
He said the firefighters collecting money this weekend will be on duty, so they may have to leave to respond to calls. But they will return to the stores when they're finished.
