  • A pickup truck that once belonged to a drug dealer is now being put up for sale by the city of Leavenworth, according to officials.
The 2012 Chevrolet Silverado came into the city's possession as part of a seizure of property in a drug case. Leavenworth Police Chief Pat Kitchens said officers had observed a drug transaction in August 2012 in which the seller was using the truck.
The truck was one of four vehicles seized by Leavenworth police last year, according to information provided by Maj. Dan Nicodemus, Leavenworth Police Department.
He said the number of vehicles seized in drug cases varies from year to year. Eleven vehicles were seized in 2010. Seven were seized the following year.
Nicodemus said he's seen five vehicles seized in a single case.
"Most often we don't take any vehicles," he said.
He said police can seize property that's directly involved in drug distribution. He said this is the case of the pickup truck that's now for sale.
Nicodemus said authorities also can seize property as a result of violation of a state drug tax stamp law. He said police also can share seized property in federal drug cases.
He said other types of items also can be seized.
"Houses are not off limits," he said.
There are restrictions on what funds raised through seizures in drug cases can be used for. The Leavenworth Police Department will be using some money from its drug seizure fund to purchase computers for police cars.
Bids for the Chevrolet Silverado will be accepted through 10 a.m. Sept. 19.
For more information about the truck, visit the city's website at www.lvks.org or call 682-9201.
