  • It didn't take long for Immaculata to take the lead Friday night in its season opening match against Heritage Christian. Sophomore Mark Hernandez knocked one of his four goals in about three minutes into the match, and it led to a 5-1 win. Hernandez may only be a sophomore, but he has played more soccer than some of the other younger players on the team. “He has a lot of experience because he plays in club ball,” said head coach Frank Mazetis. “It's very important.” Some of the seniors contributed to the win as well. Goalkeeper Phillip Hernandez had 12 saves on the day. Jaxson Qualley had a penalty kick goal in the second half, and was able to clear the ball several times when Heritage Christian was threatening near the goal. Mazetis said he was pleased with the effort his seniors put into the game. That includes James Cha, who had several chances to score, but just couldn't get the ball past the goalie. “James just has to learn,” Mazetis said. “He has to learn where to place the ball.” Mark Hernandez did have four goals, but it could have easily been more. “He jumped on the weaknesses they had and took advantage of them, but he has to take a bit more patience in getting to the goal and scoring,” Mazetis said. “He rushed some of his shots.” Next up for the Raiders is a road match against Maur Hill-Mount Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 4.
