  • The coach may be new to Pleasant Ridge volleyball, but the players aren't. The roster is loaded with juniors and seniors, including defensive specialists Abby Reed and Alexius Amos, setter Alyssa Crook, outside hitter Leah Johnson, and middle hitter Lauren Zule. A key returning junior will be outside hitter Holly Ewert. Since much of last year's team is intact, first-year head coach Alexis Shepherd said familiarity will be the strength of this team. “The girls know one another very well on and off the court,” she said. “They have great attitudes toward one another.” Shepherd has been building her familiarity with the team and has already seen the team growing. “I am very happy with the group of girls that I have,” she said. “They work so hard at getting better. At times, we lack confidence, but as the season goes on I hope to build that confidence.” The season gets started on Sept. 3 with matches against McLouth and Oskaloosa at McLouth. The first home matches are against Immaculata and Maur Hill-Mount Academy. “I want to compete and hopefully pullout some big wins,” Shepherd said. Wins can come with work ehic, which Shepherd said this team has plenty of. “The girls are very hard working and have great attitudes,” she said. “They are always coming to practice ready to work.  I hope to get their confidence up by getting some wins and continue from there.”
