To the editor:
The Leavenworth City Council and to the Leavenworth County Commissioners deserve "kudos" for maintaining the current mil levy. With major "kudos" to the Leavenworth City Council for also considering sales tax as an alternative to increasing property taxes, let those who want more and bigger government pay through increased sales tax.
The Leavenworth and Lansing School Board members earned everlasting "raspberries" for increasing the mil levy thereby raising property taxes.
In the new normal where more and more families live on fixed incomes, where wages are stagnant or falling and unemployment is ridiculously high (14 percent in the July 2013 U6 report), and taxes, fees and the cost of food, fuel and health care continue to rise, both school boards arrogantly increased the mil levy raising property taxes on struggling families. If school board members truly want to cut future budgets, they should empower a committee of property owners to identify and institute savings. Hopefully, voters will remember the school board members that raised their property taxes. Only in some fantasyland can communities tax themselves into prosperity.
Perhaps, both school boards should reacquaint themselves with the parable of the "Goose That Laid the Golden Egg."
