  • Leavenworth firefighters raised more than $4,000 for charity over the Labor Day weekend.
The firefighters collected donations as part of annual fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
"It went very well all things considered," said Jeff Porter, a member of the Leavenworth Fire Department who organized the local collection effort.
He said the $4,086.52 collected in donations during the weekend was up considerably from last year's total, which was around $1,400.
Porter said he doesn't know why the donations increased by so much this year but he's "certainly appreciative."
"I'm surprised," he said. "I'm very happy about it."
Firefighters began collecting donations Friday afternoon in front of three Leavenworth stores. Donors were asked to place money in firefighter boots held by members of the Leavenworth Fire Department.
Porter said he thanked the people of the community for filling the boots.
The fundraising effort continued Saturday and Sunday. But collections were limited to just a few hours Sunday because the firefighters, who were on duty, responded to a house fire and a water rescue call in the afternoon.
Porter said he's also appreciative of the Fire Department crews who collected donations this past weekend.
The firefighters had to contend with warm weather Friday and Saturday while standing in front of stores.
Porter said Thursday that he was preparing to mail a cashier's check for the total amount raised to the MDA.
The firefighter said he wants to explore other opportunities for raising money for the MDA during the year.
Porter also would like to raise awareness about what firefighters are doing when they stand in front of stores Labor Day weekend.
People used to be told the firefighters were raising money for "Jerry's Kids." But comedian Jerry Lewis, who was long associated with the MDA, is no longer affiliated with the organization.
