The Buffalo Bill Days Festival begins today.

The downtown Leavenworth community festival will feature a variety of activities including music acts, other performers and various contests.

The two-day festival will begin at 3 p.m. today. And the first day's festivities are scheduled to wrap up at 11 p.m.

The activities will resume at 11 a.m. Sunday and conclude at 6 p.m.

The festival events will take place on Sixth Street between Cherokee and Short streets and in the area of the Haymarket Square, which is located at Seventh and Cherokee streets.

"It's a true, true community event," Cricket Pugh, one of the main organizers of the festival.

The festival is being organized by a committee of volunteers.

She said the various non-profit organizations that are participating in the festival will keep 100 percent of the money they raise through various activities.

She said the musicians and other entertainers who will be performing at the festival are donating their time.

And there's been other services donated for the festival.

"It's amazing what our town can do," she said.

Among the events that will be featured during the festival are a beard and mustache contest and outhouse races. There also will be a pie and cake contest and a 15-minute drawing competition.

Pugh said there will be a walking tour in which people can learn about the history of 18 buildings. Tours will be offered at least on Saturday. There will be a fee.

People also can look for the chalk outline drawings around the downtown area. Pugh said businesses will have chalk available so people can color in the drawings.

Pugh said events have been added to the festival's lineup since organizers released a schedule.

She said the best way to find updates about Buffalo Bill Days is to search for the festival's Facebook page.

Also going on today in downtown is the Hog Wild West Barbecue Contest. The contest, which was organized by the Leavenworth Main Street Program, is in its second day. Its activities will run from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
