The Lady Pioneers went 5-6 over the weekend at the Winnetonka Invitational. The team split in pool play (3-3) with NKC, Smithville and Park Hill South. Due to KSHSSA rules, only bracket play was counted towards our overall record (third game played in bracket only to decide true winner). Leavenworth beat Raymore-Peculiar 2-1 in the quarterfinals and fell to the Staley Falcons in two sets in the semifinals. Park Hill South won the tournament. The Lady Pioneers were the only loss for Park Hill South on the day. "The team continues to improve,” said head coach Josh Padilla. “We have talked this season about goals –both short term and long term – to help better focus our efforts. “The girls are still settling in to the new offense and are also working diligently on improving our defense and reading of other teams styles when we make in game adjustments. We (coaching staff) are very happy with our continued improvement overall.” Senior setter Sydney Moon had 49 assists and five blocks during the tournament. Junior middle hitter Tyler Johnson had 17 kills and five blocks. Senior libero Brittany Bosarge led the team with 18 digs. Senior outside hitter Michelle Tennant was second on the team with 13 kills and nine digs. The Lady Pioneers will be at Shawnee Mission South at 5 p.m. on Thursday. They will be on the road again a week later at Shawnee Mission East on Sept. 26.
