  • Three event highlights:

    1. The Leavenworth County government is once again sponsoring the Mel Hedrick Fishing Derby for children. The free event is scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday. In the past, the event has been held at a small lake in the city of Leavenworth. But the event is moving this year to Lamborn Farm, which is located at 25761 151st St. in rural Leavenworth.

    2. The fishing derby is for children ages 3 to 15. Children will compete in three age categories ― 3-6, 7-10, 11-15. First- and second place trophies will be presented for each age group. Bobbers and fishing hooks will be provided free of charge. Stephanie Sloop, planning coordinator for the county, said children only need to bring their fishing poles. Free refreshments including hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and beverages also will be provided.

    3. The annual fishing derby is named for a longtime county employee who was fond of fishing, according to Mel Hedrick's wife, Caroline. Mel Hedrick died in 1996. The fishing derby began about a year later.

    Why you should attend:
People should go to the event "to enjoy a free family day to celebrate the beginning of fall," said Sloop, who has been involved in the organization of this year's event.
