  • There's no word yet whether authorities have identified the body recovered Thursday from the Missouri River.
Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department, said Friday that authorities were awaiting the completion of an autopsy being performed that afternoon.
"Our first step is to make an identification and determine the cause of death," he said.
But there no word was no word late Friday afternoon whether there was a determination about identification or cause of death.
The body of a man was discovered in the river around 10:30 a.m. Thursday south of the Riverfront Community Center.
The body was recovered from the river by Leavenworth firefighters and a police officer.
Nicodemus said the body immediately was transported to a morgue facility in Kansas City, Kan.
The deputy chief has not commented on the condition of the man's body.
The body apparently was discovered by people affiliated with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission's Division of Fisheries who were in a boat tracking sturgeon in the river. Using their boat, they took two Leavenworth firefighters to the body's location Thursday while the Fire Department's boat was en route to the city's boat ramp, according to Fire Department officials.
Firefighters then launched their boat to recover the body, taking a Leavenworth police officer with them.
