Longtime real estate agents Francis X. and Katie Thorne answered questions about the local housing market.
What's the state of the housing stock in the Leavenworth area?
It's fairly good. It's kind of coming back.
What are some of the factors that affect home sales in the area?
The schools and jobs. Interest rates — if they're low, that affects it.
What tips would you offer for someone looking to sell a home?
Get it cleaned up. Make it look attractive.
Have the yard mowed the bushes trimmed. A good paint job all around really helps to sell it. Don't spend a lot of money. Don't put on a whole new roof or whole new siding because you're never going to get it back. You're never going to get that money back. Just do what it takes to make it look attractive and competitive with the market.
What tips would you offer for someone looking to buy a home?
Get hold of a good Realtor and tell them what you want in a home. Tell them, "I want two or three bedrooms. I want within this school district. I want in a good neighbor, close to this or that." Then have them pull up all those homes and do a virtual tour. They have pictures of all of the houses in that market. They'll show the inside or the outside, and they can choose from several different ones and then actually go look at them.
What do you anticipate for the housing market in the coming years?
It all depends on the government, what they do to us.
