  • The Frugal Family: Costume search off and running

  • During the month of October, I know several families will be on the search for costumes. I know that several schools will have children dressing up for Red Ribbon week and other families will be participating in Halloween or costume parties.

  • During the month of October, I know several families will be on the search for costumes. I know that several schools will have children dressing up for Red Ribbon week and other families will be participating in Halloween or costume parties. I remind you that you do not have to break the bank when looking for the perfect costume.
There are several great do-it-yourself costumes that do not cost a fortune. One of my favorite do-it-yourself costumes I saw on a little girl a few years ago. Her family had simply cut out a hole at the top of a box and wrapped the box in gift wrap. The girl was dressed up as a present. I have also seen a box wrapped in white paper with black dots to make dice.
Another favorite costume is where a person has taken a piece of poster board or cardboard and covered it in tinfoil and made a Hershey's Kiss costume. I have also seen where people cover a piece of cardboard in paper and make it into a board game or a cell phone.
Costumes can be made from things you have laying around the house. A pair of jeans, a flannel shirt, boots and a bandana makes for a great cowboy outfit. Old sports uniforms makes for the perfect athlete costume and an extremely colorful mismatched outfit can be the perfect costume for a clown. Costume jewelry and sparkling clothing makes a great costume for those looking to be a professional musician.
One of my children had a function to go to last year and we had an old graduation robe. We put our children in the robe, rolled up a white sheet of paper to make it look like a diploma and made our child a college graduate for the party.
I remind residents, you do not have to spend a fortune to have fun with costumes. There are great costume ideas that do not cost a fortune and will make you the hit of any event.
