  • Lady Pioneers pick up easy win over Eudora

  • It got better and better as the night went on for Leavenworth volleyball in its 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-11) win over Eudora Monday. The first two sets started off close, but the Lady Pioneers pulled away in each of them. The third wasn't really close at any moment. “They are just really excited right now,” said head coach Josh Padilla. “I've always known they were capable but they've just never known success.” This year's success combined with a ruckus student section makes for an exciting atmosphere at Lady Pioneers matches. The students chanted and cheered the entire match and even sang to birthday girl Shelby Ogden before the second set. After the match, they came downstairs and formed a tunnel for the players as they came off the court. The crowd seemed to energize the Lady Pioneers and help them get easy points throughout the match. “We got a lot of free balls from them,” Padilla said. “We've been working on that a lot the past couple of weeks, about terminating balls on easy turnovers.” Junior Tyler Johnson certainly did some terminating herself with a number of aces and powerful kills. Padilla said she is able to use her basketball skills to help her move around and get in the right spots. Senior setter Sydney Moon was able to set ball up for her and other hitters like junior Mahogani Gant, and seniors Michelle Tennant and Savannah Lucas. There were moments when the ball was off target for the hitters, so Padilla spoke with Moon between sets to help her out. “Just trying to get her to get the timing down,” Padilla said. “We are having a bit of a connection problem with some of the hitters.” Leavenworth is 10-6 (6-3 Sunflower) heading into today's 5 p.m. league matches against Lawrence Free State and
