Scripture: Luke (NIV) 21:1 As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. 3 “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”
Observation: Jesus was watching people as they gave their offerings at the temple. What impressed him was not the amount of their gift, but the amount remaining after their giving. It was not the size of the giving, but the size of the “remaining.”
Application: Jesus watches my giving too. Although I am able to give more than in earlier years, I also know that I have more left over after my giving. Knowing that I am a steward and that it all belongs to God, I know that he is just as interested in what remains as in what is given.
Prayer: Lord, may you be pleased both with my giving and my remaining. Amen
