  • Tabor Medill Musings: David Brewer courts hosting regional tennis

    • email print
  • I want to begin these Musings with a great partnership for the City of Leavenworth Parks and Recreation, Immaculata High School and the Kansas State High School Activities Association. In collaboration with Immaculata High School, we will be sponsoring the Girls 3-2-1A Regional Tournament at the David Brewer tennis courts on Friday and Saturday. The estimated start time is 11:30 a.m. on Friday. Let’s get out and support coach Hernandez and his Immaculata girls! Go Raiders! We are now into the Adult Women’s Volleyball Fall season. In our first night, the Drillers showed they are seeking revenge for the dethroning they received last winter by the Boom! The Drillers (Wendy Sachen) swept two matches from the Boom (Sherri Schwinn) and Six Pack (Kim Rhoades Todd). The Boom came out with a split as they defeated the Six Pack. This is setting up a very interesting season of volleyball. If you want to watch some exciting volleyball matches, join us at the Riverfront Community Center gymnasium on Monday nights starting at 6 p.m. Unfortunately, we had to postpone the Havens 5K Wooded Trail run due to several unforeseen circumstances. But all you diehards out there, we will be hosting it on Saturday, March 1, 2014, and we already have individuals signed up for it! Our next run will be the High Noon Saloon Rudolph Red-Nosed Run. This is set to be run on Saturday, December 7. Get signed up early. This is one of the favorite runs in the area. You may even see Rudolph if you look quickly. High Noon Saloon provides an all you can eat pasta bar afterwards for all of the participants -- of course, my favorite part of the event! I might not allow my daughter to run as one of last year competitors in her age group has threatened to trip her this year if she tries to sprint past her at the end as she did last year --- we take this race seriously! Last year’s packet included goodies from Antlers, Oklahoma, North Pole, Alaska, and Santa Claus, Indiana --- rumor has it they are sending “stuff” again this year! The overall male and female winner receive a real Rudolph antler plaque! While we are discussing running, which is all I personally do -- discuss it. Next week, we are getting ready to announce an exciting partnership between the City of Leavenworth Parks and Recreation and the local running group, Run Leavenworth Run, in the development of a Leavenworth Race Series. This has been attempted in the past with varying degrees of success. We currently have six races involved and are looking to include additional races in the future. The races in the series will take place in Leavenworth and Lansing and will run through the calendar year of 2014. Since this is not going to be announced until next week, please do not pass it around until it is formally announced in these “Musings.” Speaking of Havens! Remember, Saturday, October 26, beginning at 7 p.m., Parks and Recreation will be hosting its annual Haunted Havens event. There will be Trunk or Treating, food vendors (my favorite part), bounce houses, games for the children, and the scariest hayrack ride you have ever been on. My wife went home and changed pants when she finished last year. You will not want to miss this event! October 1-31 is a big sign-up month for youth basketball. We are signing up Bitty Basketball for 3-6 year olds not yet in 1st grade. We also are signing up our youth basketball for grades 1-6. We will again be based on two grade increments (1st-2nd grades, 3rd-4th grades and, 5th-6th grades). This year the boys and girls will be broken out into their own leagues at all levels. We will no longer have coed youth basketball teams. Adult Coed Softball had another incredible week of games. The Harris Brothers (Tim Royal) were the big winners with two victories during the week. Also, Sunza Pitches (Jeff Asher) had their biggest victory in my two years in this position. Congratulations to these two teams! With one more victory, L&L Construction will clinch at least a tie for first, as they remained undefeated at 10-0. We Got The Runs (Josh Coffey) remains right on their heels at 8-1, with Heartland Anesthetics (Milt Rush, Sr.) standing 7-2. Only four more nights remain in the season! Our Kansas City Chiefs Get-Away is rapidly selling out as less than 20 tickets remain. With the 5-0 Chiefs looking to their first playoff appearance in years, these Chargers tickets are going to be a premium! So don’t miss out! Health tip of the week -- Brought to you by St. Luke’s Cushing Hospital: Get active -- get healthy – Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! -Tabor Medill is the recreation supervisor for the Leavenworth Parks and Recreation Department.
