  • With about two minutes to go, sophomore Bryce Helm kicked the ball from midfield to fellow sophomore Mark Hernandez, who attacked the goal and flipped the ball into the net over a diving goalkeeper to win 1-0 at Maranatha. The Raiders had an almost mirrored result when they hosted Maranatha earlier this season. Senior James Cha scored a goal in the final minute in that game to win 1-0. Coach Frank Mazeitis said it was like they won a championship on the ride home. There have been many moments for the Raiders to celebrate this season because they now have a 9-2-1 record, with the lone tie being a rain shortened game. Mazeitis said he has been telling Hernandez to attack more instead of going east and west with the ball, and that is how he was able to knock in the lone goal. Mazeitis credited his entire team like always, but said he was proud of how sophomore Andrew Jones has stepped into a defender position with senior Nathan Reardon out with a torn ACL. He also said senior Jaxon Qualley and freshman Ben Lee had their usual great performance for the defense. Senior goalkeeper Phillip Hernandez had 12 saves on the day. Mazeitis said he was impressed with him because Maranatha probably controlled the ball for 70 percent of the game, but neither Hernandez nor the defense faltered. Immaculata only had three shots on goal, but they only needed the one to get the win. The Raiders have four games remaining, with all of them on the road. They play at Eudora at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
