Two singles players for Lansing tennis qualified for Friday’s State Tournament after each of them went 3-1 in the Regional Tournament. Katie Rathjen finished third in the Regional to qualify after beating Leavenworth, St. James and Pittsburg. Her lone loss was to Blue Valley Southwest. Colby Mortensen finish in fifth place after wins over St. James, Mill Valley and St. Thomas Aquinas. Her lone loss was to Pittsburg. Mortensen’s big win was over the 6th seeded player from Mill Valley. “She handled the situation like an experienced player and not a freshman who was Regionals for the first time,” said head coach Edward Fenton. Rathejn lost her first set to Pittsburg, but was able to come back and win two sets in a row. “She’s really showed what kind of player she's becoming,” Fenton said. The doubles team of Sydney Chiles and Rachel Long lost to Mill Valley with a win in the first set, but lost the second set and the 10-point super tiebreaker. The doubles team of Loreal Brown and Bailey Zinser lost to St. James. Fenton said he’s confident in Rathjen and Mortensen after how they played in the regional. “If we can play this type of tennis on Friday, we have a shot at winning a match or two at State,” he said.
