The Leavenworth Times - Leavenworth, KS
  • Frustrating second half leads to loss for Pioneers

  • The defense was stopping pressure and Dylan Levine was making all of the saves, but then the second half started. The Shawnee Mission South Raiders came out firing and got two quick goals about five minutes into the second half. “It’s hard when you come out in the second half and your all pumped up and they get a quick goal or two and then we just kind of stop communicating,” said head coach Ken Lott. The floodgates opened after that. The Raiders scored six more goals on the way to an 8-0 victory. The Pioneers became frustrated, got two yellow cards and the Raiders kept blowing past the Leavenworth defenders. “We tend to get comfortable,” Lott said. “When you get comfortable then everybody thinks they know their job and they don’t want to talk. We’ve talked about it before and it seems to be a reoccurring problem.” The first half went well for the Pioneers – at least for the defense. The Raiders controlled the ball for much of the first half, but the Pioneers’ defense was able to keep the ball away from the goal and Levine made difficult saves when the Raiders got shots off. Lott did say he feels confident the Pioneers can pick up a win or two before the season is over. Leavenworth hosts Shawnee Mission East at 7 p.m. Thursday.
