  • Jerry Reinhardt, director of the C.W. Parker Carousel Museum in Leavenworth, answers questions about the museum's upcoming Halloween-themed Family Fun Night. The event will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the museum, 320 S. Esplanade.

    1. The museum has a Family Fun Night coming up this Saturday. Tell us about the event.
Goblins and ghosts, witches and super heros will be playing Halloween games and riding the carousel free when they take advantage of our hotdog combo for $6 per person, which includes hotdog, chips or popcorn, cookie and especially for Halloween a special witches brew (lemonade), plus unlimited rides on the carousel.

    2. What type of activities will be available during the event?
There are all kinds of carnival games where everyone wins, of course the carousel will be running continuously the whole time, and we will have cake walks and conclude as usual with the breaking of a ghostly pinata.

    3. The museum has had Family Fun Night events in the past. How did the tradition start?
We started about five years ago, and have about three of them each year. But the Halloween FFN is one of the favorites. We usually have one early in the spring to draw people back to the carousel because we are closed in January for maintenance. They became so popular that people began requesting to have them more often. Everyone has fun, including the families and the crew. On halloween, we all get to dressed up.

    4. Tell us a little about the C.W. Parker Carousel Museum.
The museum has two C.W. Parker carousels that were built in Leavenworth, plus the oldest operating carousel in the world. But the real purpose is to tell the story of Parker, and the place he had in Leavenworth history, where he built his factory in 1910. He is best known as the "carnival king," and for building more carousels than any other manufacturer. Because of the parker factories, and the Theel carousel factory, the city of Leavenworth has built more carousels than any other city in the world.
