1. The Leavenworth Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring the Haunted Havens Hayride from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Havens Park. Recreation Supervisor Nancy Baker said the hayride will feature about 10 scenes along a trail in the park in which volunteers act out a scary story.
2. There is a fee for the hayride, and food vendors also will charge for their products. But other activities set up in the area will be free. One of the free activities will be trunk-or-treating. Baker referred to this as a safe, controlled form of trick-or-treating. She said 20 vehicles will parked along Ottawa Street and manned by individual volunteers or groups who will hand out candy. The vehicles will be decorated, and there will be a contest related to the decoration of the vehicles.
3. The Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation program at Fort Leavenworth will donate the use of three bounce houses that will be set up for the event. Volunteers also will set up several other activity stations for children. The Leavenworth Fire Department will have a fire safety house. There also will be a disc jokey at the event.
Why you should attend:
"I think it's a great family event," Baker said.
She said the annual event grows each year. More than 1,000 people attended last year.
"It's a lot of fun," she said.
