  • Life is funny sometimes.
Fifteen years ago, when I was a younger man with far fewer gray hairs, I had to work through a very difficult situation. I was working at my hometown newspaper and the competing weekly product had overextended and tried to compete with us head to head.
They were struggling. But before they went out of business, CNHI purchased them and merged the two. The Chickasha Express-Star was created on Nov. 5 1998.
And here we are, Nov. 5, 2013. The first edition of a county-wide newspaper that will be Butler County’s information source for years to come has rolled off the press.
When we merged the Chickasha, Okla. newspapers, I was the managing editor.
Some of the other newspaper’s employees stayed, some weren’t so lucky. It was hard for those who kept their jobs to come to a new office and work alongside the people they had competed with for years.
Over time, many left. But some stayed and became good friends and great team members.
That merger was a big part of the success of that product before I left almost 10 years later. They’re still going strong today.
Today is the first edition of our venture. There are no hard feelings. We have all worked together for years.
There has never been a group of people in two newsrooms better suited to make a change like this. Their personalities mesh. Their skillsets compliment each other. It is my belief that readers will see an immediate benefit from these talented journalists working together to bring the news to Butler County residents.
Today’s Butler County Times-Gazette is the first of many more to come. Let us know what you think and what you would like to see in the new product.
If something isn’t working, tell us. It is impossible to please everyone. We know that.
But our goal is to create a product that delivers Butler County news and sports to you like nothing you have ever read before both online and in print.
