  • The Leavenworth Rotary is hosting a Pre-Parade Pancake Breakfast Monday.
    1. Can you tell us about the Pre-Parade Pancake Breakfast that the Leavenworth Rotary is hosting on Veterans Day?
    This breakfast is done every year at the Riverfront Community Center and local Rotarians will help serve from 7:30-10:30 a.m. This is a great pre-parade event for everyone in the community to consider attending. We offer this breakfast to Disabled Veterans at no cost; the cost for others joining us for breakfast will be $6 for adults and $4 for children. This is one of our annual service projects.
    2. The Rotary Club seems very dedicated to our service members. What are some of the other events that the club is involved in to help and honor military members?
    Primarily, we host this breakfast to honor Veterans from our local and surrounding communities. Also this month, our Rotary Club members will support another non-profit organization the Organization of Spouse and Sponsors (OISS) when they host their annual Traditional Thanksgiving Dinner for the International officers and their families who are here at Fort Leavenworth attending CGSC;
    Rotarians will serve dinner to over 300 attendees. We also recently supported the Parade of Heroes near the Legends Shopping Center.
    3. Why did the club decide to host a pancake breakfast to honor veterans on Nov. 11?
    This event is done annually as one of our yearly service projects to the community. We have hosted these breakfasts in honor/memory of the dedicated, selfless men and women who have served in our Armed Forces for over a decade.
    4. What activities does Rotary have planned for the rest of the year?
    Each year Leavenworth Rotarians support many events. Recently, we just finished up our cleanup of 20th Street Parkway and the 10th Avenue Park (near Warren Middle School); this is done spring through fall every year.
    Also a continuing effort, Meals-on-Wheels meal delivery in support of our local United Way and donation collection in support of our local Catholic Charities/Salvation Army food lockers.
    Of late, our local Rotary club has supported a recent Community Blood Drive in conjunction with our ROARACT group from University of Saint Mary. This past February Rotary held its first annual Over-the-Counter Medication Drive in support of our local Saint Vincent Clinic. In May, many members of Rotary supported the Half Trails Marathon serving at a Water Point.
    In June (and annually), we also played a big part in the success of the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life where our Rotary team earned thousands of dollars of pledges in support of the fight against cancer.
    In July we support the "Christmas in July" bell ringing effort in support of the local Salvation Army. We are also involved with our local schools, supporting Back Pack Buddies Project, we provide dictionaries to every third-grade student in all area schools and support the elementary schools vitamin program.
    Page 2 of 2 - We also support other Rotarian events such as the Parade of Heroes hosted by the Village West Rotary Club.
    Upcoming events that Rotary will support are Project Winterize, Haunted
    Havens (hosted by the City of Leavenworth), the annual Traditional Thanksgiving Dinner hosted by the Organization for International Spouses and Sponsors and Bell Ringing in support of our local Salvation Army during the Christmas holidays. In addition to events that we support, we provide scholarships to graduating seniors, grants to local non-profit organizations and others in need and myriad other community support on an as-needed basis.
    We also stay busy throughout the year with many programs in support of our youth such as Rotary Youth Leadership Academy, EARLYACT (grade school), INTERACT (high school) and ROTARACT (college). Our local Rotarians stay very busy with practically an event every month of the year.
    5. How can someone who is interested in joining the Rotary Club become a member?
    Anyone interested in serving as a Rotarian may contact our membership director, Mark Gerges at gerges.mark@gmail.com; or if you know a local Rotarian, you may also talk with them; all Rotarians would be happy to help answer questions anyone may have.
