  • Last week I mentioned how my family was trying to save money for the holidays by cutting down on our grocery bill. We have literally been stripping our refrigerator bare in an effort to save a little extra money this holiday season.
If you were to open my freezer now you will see extremely limited amounts of food. If you were to look on my shelves, you would see empty shelves. However, I have no intention of rushing to the grocery store.
For the last several weeks I admit, I have gone to the store for the staples. I also ran to the store today when I got coupons from one of the local grocery stores in town.
The coupons were for free food items. For the last several weeks, I have spent under a $100 a week on food items.
Instead of going to the grocery store and making a large expensive store purchase, I go to the store for the basics. For the last several weeks I have been extremely creative with my meals.
For example, tonight I had only two small chicken breasts.
In most cases this would not be enough to feed our entire family, but instead of going to the store and buying more meat I shredded the chicken and added it to a salad and it did feed our family of four.
However, our creative meals are not limited to just dinner.
During breakfast hours we have given up the cereal. Instead we have eaten homemade pancakes, bacon, eggs, toast and things we had in the home. We find we are not only saving money, but we are eating healthier.
Lunches have also been simple. Simple sandwiches and fruits pretty much fill up our family.
Remember when looking to save money, one of the biggest ways to save is on your grocery bill.
Find ways to cut costs and do not go to the store unless you absolutely have to go. Try to cut out all processed food items and see how much you can save. It can be extremely rewarding.
