  • To the editor:
Not so long ago (and for all I know, perhaps still today) prospective armed forces officers were steeped in a moral code which featured prominently the enjoinder: "I will not lie, cheat, steal or tolerate those who do."
The reason is obvious: when your life is in the hands of your fellow soldiers, only the strictest honesty will do.
We awake these days to the spectacle of general officers of the armed forces telling whoppers so as to mislead the public about activities in their commands.
It is a very short step indeed from there to the development of a rank-and-file which does not believe their generals or, by extension, their chain of command.
The republic staggers under the assault of lying, cheering and toleration raised to an art form.
How long before the republic, like an old soldier, just fades away?
