  • A Leavenworth man showed up at a local hospital Tuesday reporting he had been shot in the leg during a robbery, a police spokesman said.
Police were called to Saint Luke's Cushing Hospital at 1:13 a.m. Tuesday. A 34-year-old man had entered the hospital, reporting he had been shot in his left leg.
The incident was said to have occurred between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Monday. The man reported that he was walking through the parking lot in the 800 block of Spruce Street when he was approached by another man with a handgun.
The suspect reportedly demanded the victim's wallet. The two men struggled over the gun. The gun went off, wounding the victim, according to Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.
"At that point, the suspect went through his (the victim's) pockets," Nicodemus said.
The suspect reportedly took the victim's wallet and some jewelry before running from the area. The victim walked to a relative's house in the next block where an attempt was made to treat the wound. The victim eventually was transported by private vehicle to the hospital.
"We'll continue to follow up on this and try to locate a suspect," Nicodemus said.
The deputy chief said he does not know why the victim had not immediately reported the incident to police.
The suspect has been described as a black man who is bald and has multiple moles on his left cheek. He is about 6 feet tall and weighs about 175 pounds. He wore a gray hooded jacket and blue jeans with gold glitter and a white faded pattern. He also wore blue Adidas shoes.
