YOUR Library is in the unique business of warehousing information and entertainment. Programs we host also provide information and entertainment, often at the same time! From a recent program at Twin Oaks, to upcoming events, I have a lot to share with you so. . .
Saturday, November 9, YOUR Library collaborated with the Leavenworth High School's Army JROTC "Pioneer Battalion," to provide an afternoon of gaming with senior citizens at Twin Oaks. Arriving at 2:30 p.m., senior members of the Pioneer Battalion watched BINGO wrap up in preparation for their afternoon of board gaming.
Before gaming officially began, Donna Irish asked each cadet to spend a few minutes with a senior citizen and find out what they are thankful for this holiday season.
The cadets immediately partnered with a senior and spent time learning about them and their dreams. Smiles and laughter were everywhere! Using the information gathered, the cadets constructed a wall of thanks for residents to enjoy in the weeks to come.
After assembling the wall of thanks, the cadets served an appetizer of pizza to the residents.
Now it was time for gaming! YOUR Library provided Scrabble, Sorry, Yahtzee, and Checkers for the afternoon's festivities. Conversations continued between cadets and residents over the pizza and into the gaming. In accordance with Twin Oaks tradition we did not keep score, but just enjoyed quiet conversations about the past.
The afternoon saw residents sitting a little taller in their chairs as they recounted life experiences to young people who respectfully listened. Austin Tresner, Lindsey Vaughn, Emily Kurec, Joshua Sabalu, Wilfredo Figueroa-Rivera, Mark Diersen, Justice Rappel, Alex Mustain, Grace Lawrence, and Jessica Jacobs did Leavenworth High School and the JROTC Department proud. By their actions and professionalism, I can assure you the future is in good hands!
The future is bright at YOUR Library too! Sunday, November 24 at 2 p.m., join us as we welcome Kansas author Thomas Fox Averill. Mr. Averill of Washburn University in Topeka has authored three novels and numerous short stories. Using a western theme in his writing, Mr. Averill is sure to offer the Leavenworth community a unique perspective on writing and publishing the "All American" novel. I hope you can join us!
With the holiday season gearing up, YOUR Library is hosting programs we hope address concerns in our community. Identity theft is in the news every day. Addressing this burgeoning problem, YOUR Library is collaborating the Leavenworth Police Department. Detective Bastian joins YOUR Library for two informational sessions, Monday, December 2 at 10 a.m. and Thursday, December 5 at 7 p.m. Please take this opportunity to learn from the professionals about strategies to keep your identity safe!
Stress is a year-round challenge for many in our community. Denise Sullivan, of K-State Research and Extension Office, has graciously agreed to host an informational session titled, "Live More! Stress Less!" Tuesday, December 10, Denise offers two opportunities, first at 10 a.m. and again at 7 p.m., to share approaches on how to deal with stress to live more! What a gift for the holidays and for life! I hope we see you there!
