A Leavenworth man was ejected from his pickup truck when the vehicle overturned Sunday night along 20th Street, a police spokesman said.

The 20-year-old driver was transported to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, with a broken shoulder, broken collarbone, bruised lungs and other injuries. The crash was reported around 10:05 p.m. Sunday south of the intersection of 20th Street and Tonganoxie Road.

The man had been driving north on 20th Street in a 1999 Ford Ranger at what police believe was a high rate of speed.

The truck struck a curb and mailbox. The vehicle overturned twice, coming to rest on a sidewalk on the east side of the road, said Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.

The truck, which is believed to be a total loss, was towed from the scene.

Nicodemus said police are investigating whether driver impairment may have been a factor in the crash.
