  • A Lansing Correctional Facility inmate has pleaded no contest to escaping from the state prison last year, a prosecution official said.
Gary L. Furthmyer, 60, pleaded Thursday in Leavenworth County District Court to one count of aggravated escape from custody, according to County Attorney Todd Thompson.
Furthmyer walked away from his job assignment at the prison's steam plant April 18, 2012. He was apprehended May 9, 2012, in Kansas City, Kan.
He is serving a prison sentence for a 1986 conviction in Sedgwick County for indecent liberties with a child and aggravated failure to appear.
His earliest possible release date is August 2015, according to a Kansas Department of Corrections website.
This does not take into account the sentence Furthmyer will receive for the escape.
Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 31. Thompson said he doesn't know what the sentence will be but it will run consecutive to the term Furthmyer already is serving.
Thompson said Furthmyer made the plea Thursday without a plea agreement with prosecutors.
