  • To the editor:
I was struck by the juxtaposition of approaches embodied in two opinion pieces printed in the Dec. 5 Leavenworth Times.
In one, former U.S. representative Lee Hamilton decried the federal slide toward fiscal disaster and pleaded for a more responsible fiscal approach.
The other, provided in Kansas microcosm, pushes us inexorably toward the fiscal cliff. That view scrambles about, finding things to criticize and suggesting that government is the appropriate fix.
Government, of course, is run on our earnings, earnings which are finite, and when used up, will spell an apocalyptic end to expansive government.
In that connection, Rep. Hamilton might wish to reflect on the report that the federal government ran a small surplus during the time that essential elements were shut down.
Perhaps that is a light useful in leading us out of the tunnel of debt?
