  • Elaine Rose Hofstra, 89, passed away Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, at Twin Oaks in Lansing, Kan. She was born Dec. 6, 1924, to Rosa A. (Becker) and George J. Hofstra in Leavenworth, Kan., at the family home on Market Street, the youngest of five children. Following graduation from Leavenworth High School, Elaine began a career in financial support services, mainly at Fort Leavenworth. Her comfort with numbers lasted all her life, becoming a interest in playing bridge and working Sudoku puzzles in her retirement.
Elaine loved to travel in the United States and abroad, especially with her sisters, Virginia and Lillian. Favorite trips included the Netherlands, ancestral home of the Hofstras and locations for the University of Kansas basketball team away games. Elaine was a passionate Jayhawk basketball fan. For nearly three decades, Elaine and her sisters were valued season ticket holders, with seats on the floor of Allen Fieldhouse. She loved other sports, too, especially football and following the Kansas City Chiefs.
Elaine was a devoted daughter, sister, cousin, and aunt. She had a mischievous sense of humor and was a fierce competitor in family games at holidays or whenever she could encourage people to deal and play. Her green bean casserole was a Christmas basic and the recipe will be passed along for generations. She will be greatly missed.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Virginia Hofstra and Lillian Hofstra Holt; her brothers, Harold and Leonard Hofstra; and her niece, Susan Hofstra Butzin.
She is survived by her nephews, Phillip, David, Terry and Gordon Hofstra; niece Linda Hofstra, grand- and great-nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, at the R. L. Leintz Funeral Home, with a service at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Muncie Cemetery. The family requests memorial gifts to the Capital Fund of the First Presbyterian Church, Leavenworth, Kan., or to a charity of choice.
