  • To the editor:
I am writing this letter in response to the letter criticizing the Lansing High School football program.
Before retiring, I worked next to to coach Bill Pekarek for 20 years in my job as Lansing track coach.
A large number of football players were on my track teams. Several football assistants also worked in the track program.
Some people who have not been around as long are not aware of coach Pekarek's record since becoming the head football coach.
His teams won league championships in 2005 and 2007.
The Lansing football teams were 5A district champions in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2010.
Coach Pekarek has taken his teams to the playoffs each year he has been head coach.
Twice, coach Pekarek has been selected to the coaching staff for the Kansas-Missouri All Star Game.
In 2010, he was honored by the Kansas City Chiefs as a metro coach of the week.
There is no doubt coach Pekarek is a good and respected football coach.
However, there is something even more important than winning football games. Coach Pekarek is a teacher and molder of young men.
Athletes reflect the attitudes of their coach. The Lansing players are always prepared to play with enthusiasm and dedication.
They also conduct themselves with character. Our young men are not just products.
I am one of those people who live between McIntyre Road and Eisenhower, and I care. I care very much when a good coach and a fine group of athletes are unjustly criticized.
