  • Susan Kathleen (Henchek) Dean, 62 of Lansing Kan., passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, after a three year battle with cancer.

  • Susan Kathleen (Henchek) Dean, 62 of Lansing Kan., passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, after a three year battle with cancer. 
She was born June 9, 1951, in Leavenworth, the daughter of Jacob and Kathleen (Hall) Henchek.
Susan graduated from Lansing High School class of 1969 and went on to cosmetology school to pursue a career in hairdressing. She worked as a beautician for 40 years starting at the Lansing Plaza Beauty Shop (later known as Foxy Lady Hair Design) and also provided services to several nursing homes (Homestead, Colonial Manor, Easton Manor, Twin Oaks, and Oskaloosa) as well as making visits to people who were homebound, making all of them feel beautiful. She retired from hairdressing in 2011. 
Susan was a devoted mother, sister, and daughter. She was a very crafty person and always had a soft spot for dogs including her dog Eva who was with her in her final moments. Her proudest accomplishments were her kids Shantel and Jay. She was active with the Girl Scouts & Boy Scouts. 
Preceding her in death are her father, Jacob Henchek, mother, Kathleen Gaffney, brother, Steve Henchek and nephew, Nicholas Campbell.
Susan is survived by her daughter, Shantel (Milt) Rush; her son, Jay (Carrie) Dean; her sister, Sharon (RL) Henley; grandchildren, Khrystyn Dean, Jacob Rush, Bailey, Brady and Hayes Dean; nieces, Rochelle and Elizabeth Campbell; nephews, Brian Henley and Aaron Campbell; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and of course her dog, Eva who will miss her greatly. 
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. following the visitation at the funeral home. She will be cremated after the service with Inurnment at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may go to Cancer Action 10520 Barkley, Ste. 100
