Sunlight and shadows
This last day of the year
Began so bright and beautiful,
So calm and full of promise.
Soon though, winds arose
And high, cirrus clouds pushed in
As sunlight turned to shadow
And shadow turned to sunlight.
This day reflects well the year
Barely hanging
By one calendar page,
A year filled with
Its interplay of light and darkness,
Its days of joy and days of mourning.
So, at year’s end,
We brace ourselves for the shadows
While always turning our faces
Toward fleeting sunlight.
