  • At halftime Friday, the Lady Rams were up 25-22 against Jackson Heights and junior Kelsey Carpenter had eight points.
Then the second half started and Carpenter added 20 points on the way to a 62-49 win.
“We made the adjustment and she just took over,” Pleasant Ridge head coach Mike Koontz said. “We saw that she had a little bit of an athletic and height advantage over the girl that was guarding her and we took advantage of it.”
The Lady Rams scored 23 points in the third quarter and 14 in the fourth quarter.
The lead grew to double-digits two minute and 11 seconds into the third quarter after a Carpenter free throw.
Carpenter added a three-pointer from the right wing 29 seconds later.
“To come out and play like we did in the second half, it was exactly what we talked about at halftime,” Koontz said. “Pound the ball inside more. If (Carpenter) comes and gets doubled, then we kick and knock down shots.”
Junior Holly Ewert scored 19 points, with 12 coming in the second half.
She drove to the basket much of the first half, but knocked down a few long shots in the second half.
With 6:17 left in the third quarter, she threw up a long jumper that bounced out and back in to make it 33-24 Lady Rams.
She pushed the lead to 13 with a three-pointer from the left wing with 5:15 left in the game.
She added another long-range shot a minute and four seconds later from the top of the key.
“I thought we were really sluggish in the first half, but in the second half, we played our butts off and we got after it,” Koontz said.
Pleasant Ridge took a 48-29 lead into the fourth quarter, and Carpenter would score the Lady Rams’ first six points of the quarter in the first two minutes.
She scored the first two inside and the third bucket was a long jumper to make it 54-32.
“It’s not our regular offense, but we drew something up and did it every single time down the floor to give it to her,” Koontz said. “Hey, it worked. Do what you can to win basketball games.”
The Lady Rams are 4-1 and will host West Platte at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

    Rams look to correct mistakes
The Rams fell to 0-5 after a 75-46 loss Friday.
They had nine different scorers, but one of them scored double-digits.
The Rams kept it to a five-point deficit early in the second quarter after a long jumper by junior Kyle Jones to start the quarter, but Jackson Heights would lead by as much as 16 points before halftime.

Senior Sean Spurlock knocked down a three-pointer at the buzzer to make it 36-23 Cobras at the half.
“The frustration level is everybody wants to microwave and nobody wants to bake anymore,” Pleasant Ridge head coach Sean Murphy said. “When you’ve got a young group, you’ve got to bake. It’s got to take time to get things going.”
The Rams have four seniors, but much of the roster is sophomores and juniors.
“I thought the seniors did a pretty good job at times, but at times we all looked lost out there on the floor,” Murphy said.
The Rams did get several close shots up and a number of open looks from long-range, but many of them didn’t fall.
“That’s the story of our team right now,” Murphy said. “We struggle to put the ball in the hole. I thought we did a pretty good job at times tonight.”
The Cobras took advantage of several offensive rebounds as well.
“Our box outs were not good again, and that goes back to our physicality,” Murphy said. “We are just not a physical team right now and we’ll work on that. It’s the only thing we can do.”
The Rams will host West Platte following the girls’ game Tuesday.
