  • Matters of tremendous importance hinge on the success of an event designed to be light and breezy when it comes to Saturday's Ladies Night Out at Lansing Elementary School. Proceeds from the event, now entering its 10th year, are donated to the Alliance Against Family Violence. The nonprofit agency was founded in 1984 and is one of the few — if not the only — groups in Leavenworth County that helps victims of domestic and dating violence, sexual assault, child abuse and stalking. The organization also operates a confidential 24-hour crisis line. Saint Luke's Cushing Hospital and the Leavenworth Times sponsor Ladies Night Out, an evening enjoying food, shopping, entertainment and socializing. The Leavenworth Times encourages local and area residents to contribute to their community by donating to the Alliance, either through Ladies Night Out or direct giving. The Alliance's mission to protect and provide for the most vulnerable of Leavenworth County's residents is entirely commendable, and sadly, necessary. It's an unfortunate reality our society, let alone our local communities, will never be completely rid of violence, sexual assault and child abuse. Thanks to the Alliance's action and advocacy, people often in the midst of the worst period in their lives don't have to stand alone. The newspaper thanks the Alliance for their dedication and service. We hope to see the community similarly rally behind the agency this weekend. Money generated from Ladies Night Out is particularly important this year. Last week, Sister Jane Albert Mehrens told the Times that 2013's finances were stressed due to slow grant reimbursement payments. She also told the newspaper that Leavenworth and Lansing residents have always been generous in their support. The Leavenworth Times certainly hopes that continues this weekend, and well beyond. Ladies, take Saturday night to enjoy a few hours with friends, and remember this year's event is at Lansing Elementary, 450 W. Mary St. Guys, make your contribution through monetary or item donations. Let's all do our part to get the Alliance Against Family Violence off to a good financial start in 2014. Protecting our most vulnerable people may depend on it.
