  • To the editor:
My perspective is from looking at the Leavenworth sales tax increase as a local resident and consumer.
Yes, I do understand our mill rate is high.
As a purchaser of local goods from our stores, an increase in the sales tax would increase the number of people going outside of our town for items to purchase.
I believe and follow "race local and buy local." I support local businesses.
Now, proponents of the tax increase state that our local businesses will enjoy lower property taxes.
I am confused by this because the return on the mill rate reduction takes a year or more to occur.
I'm not enamored by the way the city spends its funds on some projects.
We all knew that belt tightening was coming. I applaud the local commissions for recognizing this, but as citizens what do we desire from our governments?
It is easy to answer this question for myself, but not for others.
So, I have my answer, what is yours? Tell me what you believe by voting in this referendum.
