Hot on the heels of the Nest/Google fiasco, comes the news today that Google is working on a contact lens which measures glucose levels of diabetics, and then sends a warning from the flake sized microcomputer embedded in the lens so that you can get help or an ambulance. this is yet another example of Google engaging in business practices that control both the product and the mechanism of delivery, a clear violation of the anti trust laws. No different from the railroad owning the coal mine. Google has bottomless capital and is buying up every cool toy in sight, but this is no different from the attitude of the robber barons of the nineteenth century. The Justice Department has less grounds for concern when it went after ATT, but is strangely silent now. So now Google has a computer that can be biologically implanted, that you would never know is there, which can both monitor you and transmit data about both your whereabouts and medical condition and, Google was quick to point out delightedly that it could carry a camera as well. We’ve talked about the role of government and limited government, but the one area in which government does play a role is in protecting the marketplace from anti-competitive practices, and the fed better get going on reigning in this new, cash flush monster.
