Scripture:     Psalm (NIV) 5:9  Not a word from their mouth can be trusted; their heart is filled with malice.  Their throat is an open grave; with their tongues they tell lies.

10 Declare them guilty, O God!  Let their intrigues be their downfall.  Banish them for their many sins, for they have rebelled against you.
11 BUT let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy.  Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.

Observation:   One characteristic of the Hebrew poetry is the contrasting of two different thoughts.  Here we see the difference between those whose heart is evil and those whose heart trusts in the Lord.  The mouth of one is filled with lies; the mouth of the other is filled with joy.  One is headed for a downfall; the other is under the protection of Almighty God.  One is walking in rebellion; the other is walking in the love of God.  What a difference!

Application:   Is it worthwhile serving God?  The Psalmist thought so.  And I think so too!  And when others see me, they should think so too!

Prayer:   Lord, may my heart be ever filled with joy and my mouth with praise.  May joy and praise be seen as proof of your Presence.   Amen
