  • After more than 30 years of teaching, Jeff Baxter said he count on one hand the number of students who fit in the extraordinary category. He considers Savannah Lucas to be one of those students.

Lucas, a Leavenworth High School senior, was recognized Thursday night by the Leavenworth-Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce with the Junior Citizen of the Year Award.

Baxter wrote a letter in support of her nomination for the award.

"Savannah is an extraordinary young woman with solid values, uniquely selfless discipline and boundless energy," Baxter wrote.

Lucas is in the top 5 percent of her class at LHS and a member of the National Honor Society. She also has excelled in soccer, volleyball and swimming, according to Baxter.
Chandra Fairly, LHS guidance counselor, wrote that Lucas is the epitome of the term "well-rounded student."

"Savannah is a student who breathes life into all situations and one who finds the positive aspects in whatever she is presented," Fairly wrote.

The Junior Citizen of the Year Award was presented during the Chamber's annual banquet.

Among the other awards presented during the banquet was Humanitarian of the Year, which went to John Reichley, a retired Army officer who served as an instructor at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth. He also worked as a Department of Army civilian employee, according to information provided by the Chamber.
Reichley is a life member of the Fort Leavenworth Historical Society and the Friends of the Frontier Army Museum.

A collector of military artifacts, Reichley provides historical displays for formal military balls free of charge.

He also is a columnist for the Leavenworth Times.
