  • Leavenworth County Spelling champion Sterling Hollond competed against 78 other spellers in the state level Sunflower Spelling Bee March 8 at Fort Hays State University. During the 10th round Hollond missed the word “vitiate” but then spelled three more words correctly. The winning word was “acquiescence” which earned him the Sunflower State Spelling Bee championship. He is claiming this top prize for the second year in a row and will compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. in May. Hollond is a seventh-grader from the Basehor-Linwood school district. He is pictured here competing in the Leavenworth County Spelling Bee, which was held Feb. 7 in Leavenworth.
