  • USM baseball and softball each pick up wins this week

  • The University of Saint Mary softball team was swept Saturday at McPherson College, but rebounded with two home wins Tuesday against Southwestern College.
    USM is 19-12 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
    Seniors Steeli Norton and Victoria Toplikar each picked up a win during Tuesday's doubleheader.
    Norton pitched the entire seven innings of game one, allowing two runs off seven hits and striking out three.
    Toplikar allowed three runs off nine hits in the five-inning second game. She also struck out two and walked one.
    Junior Mary Silva and Norton led the USM bats in game one, combining for four of the team's six hits.
    In game two Norton and Toplikar each went 4-4 and combined for five RBIs.
    USM hosts a doubleheader at noon Thursday against Ottawa University.
    The USM Spires baseball team is 14-14 after going 1-3 against Friends University last week and splitting Monday's doubleheader against Central Methodist University.
    The Spires lost 2-0 and 2-1 on Friday at Friends. USM split Saturday's home doubleheader, winning game one 3-2 and falling 3-0 in game two.
    The Spires beat CMU 3-2 to start Monday's doubleheader, but lost 10-5 in game two.
    Freshman pitcher Dennis Martine picked up the win during Saturday's 3-2 victory. He threw six innings, allowing two runs off nine hits and striking out two.
    Junior Keeton Krause earned a save after pitching a scoreless seventh inning.
    Freshman Joey Stauss drove in two runs to lead the Spires in the win.
    In Monday's 3-2 win against CMU, the Spires scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead.
    Stauss, sophomore Tanner Vestal and junior Jackson Perri each drove in a run for USM.
    The Spires are scheduled to play at 6 p.m. today at Kansas University.
    USM is also scheduled to host Ottawa University for a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Friday.
