  • Carol Jean Durbin was my best friend…
Born January 3, 1946, she passed away peacefully on April 2, 2014 at St. Luke’s Hospital of heart failure. Carol led a life full of both joys and challenges, always seeking the positive, optimistic view whenever she could. She lived with many physical challenges, but in spite of all of them, managed to enjoy life wherever she went. She became a familiar sight on her scooter on the sidewalks of Leavenworth! She was an inspiration to many for her enthusiasm for life and refusal to give up. Her father named her Carol because she was born so close to Christmas, and because of his love for the holiday and all things Christmas! (Christmas… Carol!) Originally from Ontario, Calif., throughout her life she lived in California, Oregon, Illinois, Nevada and most recently, Leavenworth, Kan. She was committed to education, and obtained her Bachelor’s Degree from UC Riverside, and later studied for her Master’s Degree in theology at the Dominican School of Theology & Philosophy at Berkeley, Calif.
Carol was a stalwart friend to those fortunate enough to have counted her among their own.  Devoted to her Catholic faith, she always strove to please God, loved her family and friends, both human and feline (and there were many!), and always chose to find the good in everyone, offering respect to everyone she encountered. A survivor of polio as a young girl, she possessed an innate strength bolstered by her faith. As an adult she was a school teacher, tutor and piano teacher to hundreds of children and Godmother to my son, Max. She was loved by many. The light of her friendship has been extinguished… but not her memory, or the thanks I cannot sufficiently express for having her in my life.
Thank you, Carol, for your magnificent friendship. We will all miss you, but I think I will miss you most of all!  Be happy with God!
Carol is survived by her brother David, cousins, Duane and Ursula and Don and Inge, among others, all of whom she treasured throughout her life.
